Cosmelan reduces and eliminates skin blemishes of melanic origin, increasing skin luminosity and equalizing skin tone. Cosmelan is the Gold Standard treatment for Melasma world-wide.
The procedure is a professional treatment, and therefore must be administered by a qualified and experienced practitioner. Cosmelan contains active ingredients to treat hyperpigmentation or melasma.
The treatment consists of two phases:
Phase 1 takes place in the clinic. It involves a detailed skin analysis and diagnosis. The cosmelan mask is applied to the skin after which the patient is sent home with instructions to remove the mask after 8 – 12 hours.
Phase 2 involves home-care over the next 3 months.
Results to be expected A significant reduction in brown patches may be detected as soon as one week after starting treatment. The skin should also appear more luminous and rejuvenated and can continue to improve with the use of the maintenance products over a three month period.
Reversible inhibition of tyrosinase activity:
The inhibition of the tyrosinase is only activated during treatment application. When finished, the enzyme recovers its activity producing new melanin, particularly if there is solar stimulus. Due to this, application of topical depigmenting must be reiterative to obtain results.
Inhibitor action without damaging melanocyte:
Under no circumstance does tyrosinase inhibition make the melanocytes disappear, but simply paralyzes or stops melanin production, without risk of white blemishes appearing. Cosmelan action causes complementary inhibition of other enzymes involved in the eumelanin production process, like dopa tautomerase, among others.
What is melasma?
Hyper-pigmentation is a very common skin disorder. It presents itself in brown patches, commonly found on the hands and face. In some cases, it is referred to as melasma. Your skin is 'hyperpigmented' if you have areas of discoloration on your face, chest, shoulders or hands from years of sun exposure. Also known as sun spots, age spots, and liver spots, these areas of hyper-pigmentation are visible signs of photo-aging. Skin may also become discolored after pregnancy or as a result of using oral contraceptives and is called 'melasma or chloasma'. Many cases of melasma and hyper-pigmentation will improve over time with regular use of a topical skin lighteners and exfoliators.
What causes hyperpigmentation?
Skin tone is defined by the presence of melanin. Darker skins have higher amounts of melanin, and lighter skins, have lower amounts of melanin. Often, Melasma occurs when there is increased melanin production. This creates a darker skin tone in some areas, leaving the skin blotchy and uneven. Causes of skin pigmentation can range from genetic predisposition – aggravated by high exposure to strong sunlight, to hormonal changes – such a pregnancy, menopause or taking oral contraceptives.
How does cosmelan help?
Cosmelan acts by blocking the melanin-producing enzyme (Tyrosinase), therefore reducing the production of melasma.

If you have any questions regarding these potential risks and complications. Please discuss them with our doctors or aesthetic therapist prior to treatments.
Before undergoing a treatment, please be sure that you understand that YOUR actual results will likely VARY SIGNIFICANTLY from other patient’s results, including their BEFORE & AFTER photos.
This is quite important to understand — that EVEN when you feel that you look very similar to another client in their BEFORE images, your results will likely vary significantly — because you are a unique person. Every individual has NOT only a completely unique physique but also uniquely individualistic body healing capacities, scarring tendencies and recovery processes — some of which are unpredictable even in very-healthy patients who rest adequately and do ALL the other right things before and after their procedure.
