I trust that by sharing my story, I will inspire others by giving them hope that it is possible to clear hormonal acne. My struggle with acne is the reason I do what I do every single day.
More than 90% of the world population is affected by acne.
It is astonishing to think that millions of people are affected by acne at some point in their lives. Although acne is a skin disease, it can lead to prominent emotional and psychological issues. According to Report Linker (2018), several studies have confirmed that acne can affect a person’s quality of life, self-esteem, and mood adversely.
What is hormonal acne?
The source of hormonal acne is caused by fluctuations in a person’s hormonal levels; for instance, changes during purity which is then further exacerbated by genetic or other factors. It usually appears on the jawline, chin and cheeks and sometimes ranges from being moderate to severe. Acne occurs when the skin’s pores become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. This disease results in the formation of inflamed elevations (papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts), comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), which often results in scars on the skin.
Types of acne
Markedly, because acne associates with hormonal imbalance, it is essential to remember that one will have to wait for hormonal imbalances to normalise. However, various treatment options are available to prevent severe acne and acne scarring that results from more severe acne conditions.
Filters are great, but healthily restored skin is much better.
My journey with acne started when I discontinued my contraceptive prescription. Sadly, after several weeks, my skin started to break out with painful papules and pustules all over my cheeks and jawline. As a result, my self-esteem dipped to a low point. I felt ashamed, embarrassed and unworthy, especially within my workplace. For me, it was highly challenging working as a somatology professional treating a variety of skin conditions while struggling with an acne skin condition myself. “How am I suppose to tell others how to treat and clear their skin with my skin looking the way it does?” My confidence decreased day by day to a point I never thought was possible. As a result, I stopped taking selfies or photos of myself in general. If I did manage to take any photos, I would, in frustration, spend over an hour applying makeup. Above all, I would still use filters to photoshop my images because I always felt that my acne was extremely visible. In hindsight, I have become very critical of myself.
Regardless of my struggle with acne, as a qualified skin professional, I have learned to heal my skin from acne safely. Although acne is physically and emotionally painful, there is one silver lining; you don’t have to deal with the condition alone. I am here to help my clients with their acne journeys.
